Thomas Moore – A Religion of One’s Own (1 CE)

Most people today, it seems, hear the word religion and immediately think of institutions, ancient traditions, dogma, authority, moral demands and rituals that are more or less meaningful. In Thomas Moore's new book, as examples of religious people he refers to people like the astronaut Edgar Mitchell, Henry David Thoreau, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Glenn Gould who found and expressed a sacred point of view in their personal experiences and their art. Steeped in Jung, he sees religion as the result of an individual movement toward depth and an awareness of the mysterious and the beyond-ego elements in ordinary living.

The Jung Platform is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Jung Platform maintains responsibility for the program and its content.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Still, the book is not about a self-centered quest or personal psychology. It suggests a re-visioning and deliteralizing of community, so that the newly imagined religious person finds fellowship with all beings on the planet, and beyond. The book spells out various ways, inspired and guided by the spiritual traditions, but far-ranging, we can make our lives thoroughly religious, avoiding the creeping secularism of the age. It is for everyone—church-goers, seekers, agnostics and even atheists. Instead of a vague spirituality, it recommends a freshly re-invented notion of religion suited to the 21st century.

Thomas Moore is the author of the bestselling book Care of the Soul and fifteen other books on deepening spirituality and cultivating soul in every aspect of life. He has been a monk, a musician, a university professor and a psychotherapist, and today he widely lectures on holistic medicine, spirituality, psychotherapy and the arts. He has a Ph.D. in religion from Syracuse University and has won several awards for his work.

Michael Conforti – Dreams, Jung, M.L. von Franz

Once upon a time, or so begins many a story, we looked to the heavens and to the angels for inspiration. And we prayed. The Gods of antiquity have now been replaced with clever conversation, and now we stand in saluted attention to the personal. So with the illusion that the Gods are no longer worthy of our attention, we seek inspiration from the commonplace and look for divinity in what we can easily see in the light. Throughout our history as a species, there has been deep regard for the dream as a source of knowledge far greater than that of the conscious mind. In dreams we are presented with an understanding about the nature of our life and destiny, which far too often is veiled from our eyes because of the many “concerns” of daily life. And then, too, if we listen closely to the whispers of this voice, we can hear a murmur of a destiny waiting to be embraced.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

In this lecture, Dr Conforti will present the work of the early masters in Jungian psychology and discuss the presence of the objective psyche in dreams. Jungian psychology was the first to examine dreams, the personal and collective unconscious and our rich unconscious life using story, myth and active imagination to illuminate the workings of the unconscious elements of our psyche. The writings of C.G. Jung, Marie-Louise von Franz, and the other early Jungians were truly inspired. They brought us into a world where spirit, Self and soul were captured on every page, where the pages were the canvas for these artists seeking to capture in words and images what they experienced within the inner world.

Dr. Michael Conforti is a Jungian analyst and the founder and Director of The Assisi Institute. He has been a faculty member at the Jung Institute Boston and Jung Foundation of New York. A pioneer in the field of matter-psyche studies, Dr. Conforti investigates the workings of archetypal fields and the relationship between Jungian psychology and science. He lectures worldwide. He is the author of Threshold Experiences: The Archetype of Beginnings (2007) and Field, Form and Fate: Patterns in Mind, Nature and Psyche.

David Cumes – An Indigenous Approach to Dreams

Indigenous people believe that dreams are scripted by our ancestors to instruct us, and are every bit as real as the waking state. In South Africa, sangomas (shamans) use dream interpretation to make diagnoses for a patient’s waking life based on this ancestral instruction. Because dreams are most often expressed in the subtle language of metaphor, and are also vulnerable to pollution by trickster spirits, the sangomas’ ability to interpret dreams makes it a mastered skill. Learning how the ancestors reach us and how to distinguish true dreams from those scripted by dark spirits, opens us up to a source of wonder and sometimes even life-saving information.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

David Cumes, MD, received his surgical training in Johannesburg and has taught at Stanford Medical Center. After extensive travel which included time with the Bushmen and shamans in Peru and South Africa, Dave was initiated as a sangoma in South Africa. He is a bridge between Western medicine and indigenous healing wisdom maintaining his surgical practice while also practicing as a sangoma out of his home. Dave has authored five books including The Spirit of Healing and Africa in My Bones.

Lionel Corbett – Jung’s Approach to Spirituality and Religion

Jung's approach to the psyche is intrinsically spiritual, which is why many of us are attracted to his work. At a time when increasing numbers of people are disenchanted with traditional religious institutions, Jungian psychology offers the possibility of developing a personal spirituality that is not dependent on any dogma or doctrines. For therapists and for people on an individuation journey, Jung's psychology allows us to work spiritually and psychologically at the same time.

This lecture will describe Jung's view of religion and the ways in which the manifestations of the transpersonal psyche such as numinous experience are related to the individual’s life situation and personality. I will also discuss Edward Edinger's suggestion that thanks to Jung we are now entering a new stage in our religious development, which he called a new dispensation.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Dr. Lionel Corbett trained in medicine and psychiatry in England and as a Jungian Analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. His primary interests are: the religious function of the psyche, especially the way in which personal religious experience is relevant to individual psychology; the development of psychotherapy as a spiritual practice; and the interface of Jungian psychology and contemporary psychoanalytic thought. Dr. Corbett is a core faculty member of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California, where he teaches depth psychology. He is the author of numerous professional papers and three books: Psyche and the Sacred, The Religious Function of the Psyche, and The Sacred Cauldron: Psychotherapy as a Spiritual Practice.

Coleman Barks – A Turning Night of Stars

An Evening of Rumi with Music and Commentary – A Turning Night of Stars. The ecstatic poetry of 13th century Persian mystic Rumi, the most widely read poet in America today, performed by Coleman Barks, acclaimed poet, translator and interpreter with Grammy award winning cellist, David Darling.

Experience thirteenth-century mystical poet Rumi as you never have before—through the resonant, whiskey-and-syrup voice of Coleman Barks, a preeminent poet, scholar, and celebrated interpreter of Rumi’s work. He is bard in the truest sense of the word. Coleman’s extraordinary recitation is gracefully accompanied by the music of David Darling, a Grammy-winning artist who connects the earthy incense of Rumi’s words with the celestial strings of the cello. In this exquisite performance, Heaven and Earth unite in one of the most stunningly beautiful expressions of music and poetry that you will ever experience.

This event was hosted by the Jung Society of Utah and Two Arrows Zen Center.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Coleman Barks was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was educated at the University of North Carolina and the University of California at Berkeley. He taught poetry and creative writing at the University of Georgia for thirty years. Coleman is the author of numerous Rumi translations and has been a student of Sufism since 1977. His work with Rumi was the subject of an hour-long segment in Bill Moyers’s Language of Life series on PBS, and he is a featured poet and translator in Bill Moyers’s poetry special, “Fooling with Words.” He is the father of two grown children and the grandfather of four. He lives in Athens, Georgia. http://www.colemanbarks.com/

David Darling — “Maverick cellist” is the phrase most often assigned to Grammy-winning artist David Darling, but it hardly captures the richness, diversity, breadth and sense of humor of a man who literally redefines the way the cello is played and the way music is taught. His prolific collection of recordings and innovative performance style represent an eclectic variety of musical genres. His playful and unconventional teaching methods have helped open the world of music and improvisation to thousands of individuals. http://www.daviddarling.com/

James Hollis – Hauntings (3 CEs)

This course is about dealing with hauntings of invisible (metaphorical) ghosts that (may) direct our daily lives. Hauntings can be seen as obstacles in the way of finding one’s path in life, but hauntings can also be approached from a depth psychological perspective and be seen as a call for individuation.

James Hollis sees hauntings as an invitation to rise above the ghost that is haunting you and as an opportunity to get unstuck and move forward to a life closer to your soul and (re)connect with the meaning of your life.

We all live to a certain extent in service to the past and to values of our family of origin. Also can we be seized by the effect of untold stories, by emotions like shame or guilt, by disappointments and the sense of betrayal when our expectations are not met, and/or by complexes or experiences in previous relationships. Those conscious and unconscious dynamics can haunt us, until we are forced to face our pain and fear, and the path of healing becomes clear.

In this Jung Platform course James Hollis will help participants to become more authentic and connected to their souls by driving out the invisible energies that hold us back in our development. One needs to engage with life’s mysteries, because from such engagements a more considered life may come.

The Jung Platform is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Jung Platform maintains responsibility for the program and its content.

Robert Waggoner – Lucid Dreaming

On the surface, lucid dreaming seems deceptively simple – a paradoxical state in which you know you are dreaming, while you are dreaming. There, you can fly through space, create fire breathing dragons, and cast spells like Harry Potter, all in the safety of your subconscious mind. Scientifically validated for thirty years, recent neuroscientists have deemed lucid dreaming a “hybrid state of consciousness,” since the dreaming brain and portions of the waking/conscious brain show simultaneous activation. Yet some experienced lucid dreamers, like our presenter, will argue that lucid dreaming allows a person to interact directly with one’s inner Self. Moreover, these interactions meet the criteria that Carl Jung established to show the existence of an “inner awareness.”

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Robert Waggoner is author of the acclaimed book, Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self, and a past President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD). He co-edits the free online magazine, The Lucid Dream Exchange, and frequently speaks on lucid dreaming at colleges and conferences worldwide.

Aaron Kipnis – Psychology of Money (1 CE)

Money is a subject often more taboo than sex, religion or political affiliation. And psychology, for the most part, has been no braver or wiser than other forums in hosting useful dialogs on the topic.

The myriad money complexes clients and therapists both bring to the consulting room reveal many parallels between money and psychology through metaphors such as: inflation, depression, mania, value, allure, obligation, worth, deficit, loss, gain, promise, transference, confidence, failure and trust. Money is the number one reason married couples separate and many families are torn apart by their economic issues, yet money is seldom mentioned in any of the trainings for psychotherapists.

As we engage with the phenomena of money we will consider its complex roles in identity, self regard, interpersonal relationships, psychopathology and the injuries of class at all points of the economic spectrum. We will try to understand some of the imaginal underpinnings of our contemporary economy as we deeply explore our personal psychologies of money and consider new possibilities. In an attempt to move beyond quantitative concepts we will also discuss the psychological complexes, symbolic meanings, archetypal influences and spiritual significance of money.

Ginette Paris – Love and Heartbreak (1 CE)

The pain of mourning and heartbreak is neurologically similar to being submitted to torture. There seems to be only one way to end that agony. Neuroscience calls it an “evolutionary jump” and Jungians call it the process of Individuation. The good news is, if you love, your heart should be broken at some point in your life. If not, your love may remain the innocent love of a child. Ginette Paris will demonstrate how neuroscience agrees with the basic tenants of depth psychology and will discuss how the process of Individuation begins with heartbreak.

Genpo Merzel – An official Introduction to Big Mind as Western Zen

Ken Wilber has described Genpo Merzel’s Big Mind Process as “arguably the most important and original discovery in the last two centuries of Buddhism.” Big Mind is rooted in Jungian Psychology and in Eastern Zen.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

The mind is a wonderful thing, capable of brilliant thought and creativity, as well as bringing misery and suffering. How can we understand and work with it? How can we channel this great gift and resource to bring love and joy to our lives and relationships? In this hour long introduction, Zen Master Genpo Merzel will work with us to explore and directly experience how our minds can become our greatest friend and ally.
Dennis Genpo Merzel is a revolutionary in the tradition of the old Zen Masters who so embodied Buddhist teaching that they were able to revitalize and transform it for their own day and age. As Buddhism moved from India to China to Japan and other Asian cultures, it found unique expression in each culture that made its fundamental teachings resonate for a new time and place. Genpo Roshi is working to transmit the essence of the Buddha’s teachings in a way that is readily accessible to Westerners and relevant to our everyday life.
Dennis Merzel is an American Zen and spirituality teacher, also known as Genpo Merzel Roshi. He was a student and is heir of the Japanese-born Zen teacher Taizan Maezumi. Merzel obtained a Master's degree in educational administration from the University of Southern California and went on to become a school teacher.
