Alchemy Course: Silver and the White Earth (James Hillman’s essay) – By Robert Bosnak

An In-depth Course on Alchemy

Embodying James Hillman’s Alchemical Psychology
on Silver and the White Earth

By Robert Bosnak

About the course:  Silver and the White Earth

This chapter is Hillman’s masterpiece of alchemical psychology. All the previous chapters have led up to this white jewel. It guides us to the very heart of the art of reflection and to the essence of the Queen of creative imagination: the Moon, Luna.

James Hillman was a past master of alchemical psychology. This field uses metaphors derived from ancient alchemy to elucidate deep structures in the creative imagination. Creative processes are not random. Imagination embodies along lines that become apparent when we ponder the frequently incomprehensible images of alchemy.

James Hillman was the primary training analyst of Robert Bosnak, who developed the field of embodied imagination: the way in which images can be felt in the body and shape our embodied condition. By studying alchemical psychology we come to understand ourselves and other humans in surprising ways that frequently diverge sharply from the habitual understandings we have unconsciously absorbed from the cultures in which we were raised. These new awarenesses can engender unexpected vitality and wonder.

This course will follow the teachings of Hillman in his final and most profound book, Alchemical Psychology. This volume covers a lifetime of studies and is quite difficult to read by someone who is not deeply steeped in alchemy, the work of C.G. Jung as well as James Hillman. Bosnak has worked with and studied these thinkers for well over 40 years.

In the course we will go through the chapter ‘Silver and the White Earth’ page by page, and frequently line by line, sometimes dropping even between the lines into the great mystery itself. For those who have tasted these mysteries, there is no way back. One is haunted by them for life. It was so with Jung, Hillman, and with Bosnak as well. It will happen to you if you’re open to it.

Here is a sample of the questions and reading suggestions before each class.

Course description:

Based on a close reading of Mary Shelley’s novel this webinar series explores multiple ways her story is a re-telling of the mythic tale of Prometheus and the Christian story of creation within the context of science and technology. As such Shelley’s story haunts our time as a prophetic unfolding of the origins of technological power. Using a Jungian-Archetypal approach, this series takes up these prophetic amplifications as a collective symptom that calls us to remember what we have forgotten regarding our place within nature and the cosmos.

Course presenter:

Robert Romanyshyn, Ph.D., is a Jung Platform Faculty member. He is also an Affiliate Member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and an emeritus professor of psychology in the Clinical and Depth Psychotherapy Programs at Pacifica Graduate Institute. O My Prophetic Soul! Dreams, visions, revelations.

O My Prophetic Soul!
Dreams, Visions, Revelations

Do we, like Hamlet, have prophetic souls? According to Jung, the function of the unconscious is not prophetic but prospective – an anticipatory combination of probabilities (not certainties) about the future. Self-proclaimed, so-called prophecy may also be psychopathology. Jung warns us that the sudden appearance of a prophet is often evidence of “psychic disequilibrium.” From Moses to Jesus to Muhammad (who, when he came out of the cave and came down from the mountain, wondered whether the experience was truly prophetic, merely poetic, or utterly psychotic) to Joseph Smith – of what value are dreams, visions, revelations? When and why does prophecy succeed or fail? Is it an inspiration, or is it a hallucination in which we just “see things” and “hear things”? Michael Vannoy Adams will present famous cases of altered states of consciousness and lead an interactive discussion about the importance of contemporary epiphanies.

About the Speaker: Michael Vannoy Adams is a Jungian psychoanalyst in New York City. Adams is the author of four important books – For Love of the Imagination: Interdisciplinary Applications of Jungian Psychoanalysis (2014), The Mythological Unconscious (2010, 2nd rev. ed.), The Fantasy Principle: Psychoanalysis of the Imagination (2004), and The Multicultural Imagination: “Race,” Color, and the Unconscious (1996). He is a clinical associate professor at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He is also a faculty member at the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association, the Object Relations Institute, and the New School, where he was previously associate provost. He has been a Marshall scholar in England and a Fulbright senior lecturer in India.

Malidoma Some – A Healing Relationship with the Ancestors

Topic: “The endless challenges faced daily in this culture could be traced back to a disturbing relationship with ancestors. This in turn, could be a reflection of the rather dysfunctional relationship forced upon people by the circumstances of modernity. How do we repair, heal, and honor the undying tie with our forbears? How can this reflect on our relationship with this world and with each other in family and in community? These are some of the questions that this weekend will attempt to address. We will engage our ancestors, the good and the bad, the appealing and the less than appealing in an attempt to clear whatever dirty laundry has been the unfinished homework that together we must do. We will learn of their wishes and share ours with them. Together with them we will ritualize our mutual concerns in an initiative that heals our world and theirs.” ~Malidoma Patrice Somé~

Presenter: Malidoma Patrice Some, PhD is from Brukina Faso, West Africa. He is a gifted shaman and holds three master’s degrees and two doctorates. He is a storyteller, author and spokesman of the West African wisdom tradition.

Alchemy Matters

The Art of Alchemy was not just a precursor of science. Alchemy held that all matter has an inner life. Alchemists studied their material not as object, but as subjects with whom to communicate. This is similar to our experience with dreaming. In dreams we find ourselves in an experientially real world created by imagination where everything exists in a state of constant animation. Since alchemy studies the animation of matter Jung found it a royal entry into the study of the deep embodied imagination. We know that he continued his journey through the Deep, begun in the Red Book, in his study of alchemy culminating in his magnum opus Mysterium Coniunctionis.

In this talk Jungian psychoanalyst Robert Bosnak, himself an over 40 years student of alchemy and dreaming, will explore the inner microcosm of things by way of the alchemical writings of C.G. Jung and James Hillman. He will demonstrate the profound impact alchemy could have on psychotherapists, practitioners of the arts, and upon anyone interested in creative imagination. The study of alchemy quickens the senses and makes us more alive as we derive poignant inspiration from our ancestors.

Michael Conforti – Dreams, Jung, M.L. von Franz

Topic: Once upon a time, or so begins many a story, we looked to the heavens and to the angels for inspiration. And we prayed. The Gods of antiquity have now been replaced with clever conversation, and now we stand in saluted attention to the personal. So with the illusion that the Gods are no longer worthy of our attention, we seek inspiration from the commonplace and look for divinity in what we can easily see in the light. Throughout our history as a species, there has been deep regard for the dream as a source of knowledge far greater than that of the conscious mind. In dreams we are presented with an understanding about the nature of our life and destiny, which far too often is veiled from our eyes because of the many “concerns” of daily life. And then, too, if we listen closely to the whispers of this voice, we can hear a murmur of a destiny waiting to be embraced.

In this lecture, Dr Conforti will present the work of the early masters in Jungian psychology and discuss the presence of the objective psyche in dreams. Jungian psychology was the first to examine dreams, the personal and collective unconscious and our rich unconscious life using story, myth and active imagination to illuminate the workings of the unconscious elements of our psyche. The writings of C.G. Jung, Marie-Louise von Franz, and the other early Jungians were truly inspired. They brought us into a world where spirit, Self and soul were captured on every page, where the pages were the canvas for these artists seeking to capture in words and images what they experienced within the inner world.

Presenter: Dr. Michael Conforti is a Jungian analyst and the founder and Director of The Assisi Institute. He has been a faculty member at the Jung Institute Boston and Jung Foundation of New York. A pioneer in the field of matter-psyche studies, Dr. Conforti investigates the workings of archetypal fields and the relationship between Jungian psychology and science. He lectures worldwide. He is the author of Threshold Experiences: The Archetype of Beginnings (2007) and Field, Form and Fate: Patterns in Mind, Nature and Psyche.
